The ESV Expository Commentary: Now Complete
Welcome to Not Another Book or Bible Review. My name’s Cam Hyde, bringing you your unconventional, unorthodox, unliftable book and Bible reviews. And today, we’re talking about a long-awaited release: the ESV Expository Commentary on Genesis through Numbers—and let me tell you, it is massive.
We’ve been waiting for years for this final volume to drop, and it’s finally here. Honestly, they probably should have split it into two volumes. It’s that big. Just setting it down speaks for itself—it’s a giant of a book. You may even want to go digital with this one. Not going to lie.
Contributors
Let’s talk contributors:
- Genesis – Ian Duguid (I hope I’m saying that right)
- Exodus – J. Gary Millar
- Leviticus – Christine Palmer
- Numbers – Ronald Bergey
Editors
The editorial team is top-tier:
- Ian Duguid – PhD from the University of Cambridge
- James Hamilton Jr. – One of my personal favorite theologians from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary
- J. Gary Millar – Vice President of Academics and Professor of Old Testament at Covenant Theological Seminary
(And no, I’m not going to pretend to pronounce all these names correctly—this is Not Another Book or Bible Review, after all.)
Why This Commentary Set Stands Out
One of the best features of the ESV Expository Commentary is that it includes the full biblical text. So if you’re reading a section like Genesis 40, the actual passage is right there in the book. No need to pull out a separate Bible.
Each section includes:
- A section overview
- A section outline
- The verse-by-verse commentary
- A response section, which acts as application or takeaway
It’s a clean layout and a thoughtful structure that makes study, sermon prep, or even devotional reading more accessible.
Final Thoughts
Even though it’s a physically large set (seriously, you might need to reinforce your bookshelf), this commentary series is a powerful resource. The contributors are solid, the content is rich, and the format is extremely user-friendly. I’m genuinely excited to start using it more in my personal study and sermon prep.
Well done, Crossway.
