Disclaimer: I received a copy of this Bible in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Hallelujah and welcome to another unconventional, unorthodox, but totally creedal book and Bible review. Today, I’m taking a look at the ESV Creeds and Confessions Bible in black goatskin—and I have some thoughts.
Crossway originally released this edition a while back, then it quietly disappeared. Now it’s back—and better than ever. This re-release is a true glow-up.
Not the New Text Edition—And That’s Okay
Let’s address this upfront: this is not the new 2025 text edition. But don’t worry—those updates are minor, and they won’t affect your enjoyment of this Bible.
This isn’t marketed as an heirloom edition, but it certainly gets some heirloom-worthy touches. One of my favorites? The satin cloth wrap. It’s so much nicer than the standard cardstock sleeve you find on many premium Bibles. Little details like this elevate the experience.
Upgrades Over the Previous Edition
I don’t have my old edition anymore, and honestly, I’m glad—because this one outshines it in every way.
- Goatskin Cover: The leather is thicker, richer, and more textured than before. The previous version felt a little thin and flat; this one has depth and a tactile grain that makes it a joy to hold.
- Spine Design: The gold stamping, raised hubs, and clear “Creeds and Confessions” title give it a refined, classic look.
- Art Gilt Edges: A huge improvement. This time, it’s a proper gold-under-red finish—no glittery, airbrushed look like before. It looks and feels premium.
- Edge-Lined Construction: The inside features a durable liner (feels like vinyl) with gold perimeter gilt. It’s solidly built for longevity.
If I had one wish, it would be for slightly thicker ribbons—but I’ve heard that’s coming on future heirloom editions later this year.
Inside the Bible
- Layout: Double-column format with corner references.
- Type Size: Generous 10-point Lexicon typeface—large, readable, and easy on the eyes.
- Content: Includes all 13 historic creeds and confessions, each with an introduction.
- Build Quality: Smyth-sewn binding for durability and a lifetime guarantee.
It reads beautifully. The print size makes it perfect for extended reading, and the inclusion of the creeds and confessions adds rich historical depth to your study.
Final Thoughts
If you’re looking for a premium-quality edition of the ESV Creeds and Confessions, this is the one to get. The upgraded goatskin, proper art gilt, and thoughtful presentation make it a standout Bible at its price point.
Highly recommended.
