Francis Chan is an author and pastor who has always resonated with me. His call to really believe Jesus and do what he says is a message that I think we still need each and every day.
In his new book, Beloved, he comes with another very important message, namely, that we need to believe God loves us. He doesn’t love us only if we follow the rules perfectly and get everything right. He loves us despite our failures and our weaknesses.
Chan says many Christians struggle in believing in God’s love for them and so this is a timely and needed message. He likens this situation to his children not believing he actually loves them and how that would break his heart. How much must this break God’s heart?
I’m always a big fan of Chan’s writing style. He is engaging and I love his ability to speak in ways that are so easy for me to understand. He is truly a gifted communicator.
One of my favorite things in this book is Chan’s commitment to knowing God through the Scriptures. He encourages Bible reading and saturating ourselves in the Word of God in order to be able to know Him. He also highlights the importance of other disciplines like unity in being part of a body and prayer for one another. These are ways we strengthen ourselves in Christ and endure to the end.
Ultimately, I think Chan has written another timely book that is important for our culture. I think his message will resonate with many Christians especially in the Western World. His encouragement is simple—be loved.
