Faithful Endurance: A Book Review
Ministry can be filled with many ups and downs. Pastors can face joyful highs and discouraging lows. As a pastor, sometimes it can be easy to feel alone or that you are the only one facing troublesome times. Just like we all do, pastors need community and encouragement. That is why I find Faithful Endurance to be a welcome resource for pastors and shepherds.
Faithful Endurance is a book put out by The Gospel Coalition and edited by Collin Hansen and Jeff Robinson Sr. It is comprised of a series of essays from different pastors such as Tim Keller, D.A. Carson, Tom Ascol, and many others. Each article begins with a letter from a pastor who is facing a real-life situation and asking for wisdom. A veteran pastor then replies to the situation.
I believe every pastor should have a copy of this book. Some of the essays are situational and difficult; others are issues that pastors will face regularly. Every essay feels somewhat therapeutic. There is just a comfort one has when they feel they aren’t alone. Social media is a great tool to connect pastors to one another, but this book provides a lot of wisdom from some pastors you may never get the chance to talk to in real life.
I also think this book would be a helpful resource for church members. It is helpful any time a church member can better understand some of the things their pastor faces. I’d love to encourage church members to better understand and know their pastors and this book is a helpful resource in that regard.
Pastors are called to shepherd, but the shepherds often need encouragement themselves. While this doesn’t replace authentic community, it’s a helpful tool for pastors. I highly recommend everyone read Faithful Endurance.
