To Seek and To Save by Sinclair Ferguson: a Book Review
I’ve never celebrated Lent. It always kind of seemed like a Catholic thing. But as I sit here thinking about Lent, my mind is taken back to Advent. A few years ago, I had never celebrated Advent, but now it is a season that serves to make Christmas much more meaningful for me. One of my favorite Advent devotions is called Love Came Down at Christmas by Sinclair Ferguson. Dr. Ferguson has a way of writing and speaking that makes Christ grand. He has now written a devotional for the season of Lent called To Seek and To Save: Daily Reflections on the Road to the Cross.
To be clear, I don’t think you have to read this devotion during the Lent season, but I do think you should read it. Like I said, Dr. Ferguson has a way of making Christ grand in our eyes and hearts and I think we all need more of that. To put the conclusion at the beginning, you should read this book.
Dr. Sinclair B. Ferguson is a Ligonier Teaching Fellow and Chancellor’s Professor of Systematic Theology at Reformed Theological Seminary. He is married to Dorothy and has four grown-up children.
In this book, Dr. Ferguson is going to invite you to join with him in journeying through some of the gospel of Luke. Luke describes many encounters encounters that Jesus had with a wide variety of people. He says that each encounter you join him on “will build up a picture of the journey’s real purpose” (8). At the end of each day Dr. Ferguson will give you something to reflect on and there is an area where you can journal and respond to his reflection questions. I personally love when devotion books have journaling space. There is also extra space in the back included for your response should you need it.
You can use a devotional book like this personally, in a group, or with your family for your family worship time. I’m planning to use this with my wife. I think it will lead us to the cross as we approach Easter and will make Easter day itself more meaningful when we celebrate it.
Maybe you’re like me and you’ve never celebrated Lent or maybe it’s a tradition in your household. Either way, I think you’ll find To Seek and To Save a helpful resource during Lent or any time of the year. Christ is far greater than any of us can imagine, but Dr. Ferguson can help us get closer to that grandeur.
