The Berean Study Bible
It’s odd to say a Bible translation has come out of nowhere and gained a cult following, but that’s exactly what has happened with the Berean Study Bible. Not your traditional study Bible, the Berean Study Bible is actually a translation that has seen an explosion in popularity among Bible enthusiasts. Is the popularity warranted?
The Berean Study Bible (BSB) doesn’t have many options to choose from when it comes to physical copies. You can choose from two hardcover editions or two softcover editions at this website. I got my hands on a tan softcover to see what the fuss was about.
The description for the BSB says it “is named after the commitment to the Scriptures held by the Berean, who studied God’s word daily and held Paul’s teaching up to its light. This is a completely new English translation of the Holy Bible, effective for public reading, study, memorization, and evangelism.” I must say that as I’ve read different sections of the BSB, I have found it enjoyable to read. I also enjoy some of the features included in the translation. Under subheadings are Scripture references to parallel passages. It’s like having very specific and well placed cross references. I’m also a fan of he capitalized pronouns for deity references as well as the translation notes.
Physically, this is a big Bible, but I also love that aspect. It’s double-column, but has a nice, large 10.5 Cambria font. I love large font sizes and the BSB doesn’t hold back in this area. Worth mentioning is that words of Christ are in black. Even more, the paper included in this edition is awesome! It’s nice and thick with no ghosting. It has a 45 gsm Thincoat Plus Bible Paper, which I really like.
While this isn’t a premium Bible, after spending some time in the BSB, I do think it has earned the title study Bible. The features included in this translation really lend themselves to study. I admit that I didn’t buy the hype when it was first ramping up, but I think the BSB is a really nice resource to have on hand.
