In the Lord I Take Refuge by Dane Ortlund
Crossway has rebranded the ESV Devotional Psalter and it now has a more devotional feeling name—In the Lord I Take Refuge. This book features the same devotions written by Dane Ortlund that were in the previous Devotional Psalter. This book will help the reader reflect and meditate on each Psalm in the Bible.
I’m reviewing the digital version of this book so I can only speak to the quality of the content and not the actual construction of the book. I really like this book because each Psalm is printed alongside the devotion. That gives it a two-fold use. It can be a Psalter that you keep with you to have the Psalms in a small, portable package. But it can also be a devotional. The devotions are short and Ortlund reflects on them well. He doesn’t add too much so as to take away from the Psalm, but he does write devotionally so his words really connect with you as you journey through life.
I have the top grain format of the ESV Devotional Psalter so I will honestly miss that nice binding as this has been repackaged, but I think the rebrand is a good choice as it conveys this book as something devotional. Also, to many, the term Psalter can be intimidating if they’re not familiar with that lingo. This book is now more approachable for a lot of people who will benefit greatly from Ortlund’s writing.
