Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mostly write about Christian Living, but I enjoy the Kentucky Wildcats, New Orleans Saints, and a good cup of coffee.

Gospel Driven Ministry by Jared C. Wilson: A Book Review

I think Jared C. Wilson is one of the best Christian writers of my time. The dude never seems to run out of book ideas and I’ve found all of them to be engaging and helpful. I mean, he’s the author in residence of Midwestern Seminary if that tells you anything! He not only cranks out books, but also writes a plethora of articles and podcasts. His newest book, Gospel Driven Ministry, is no exception when it comes to quality.

This book is helpful for new and seasoned pastors alike. Jared is always gospel-centered in his books and I think this book is a great reminder to veteran pastors and a helpful handbook to brand new ones. In the introduction Jared says, “This book is about the ways in which those given the stewardship of this mystery—pastors of local churches—must meditate on it, proclaim it, and adorn it with their lives (and their deaths)” (7). This is a high calling and Jared helps ministers focus their eyes on the amazing call of pastoral ministry.

Jared touches on all aspects of pastoral ministry, which I think especially newer ministers and those considering ministry will find especially helpful. He also has some really practical things in this book and these are what I found most helpful. Things like how to conduct weddings, funerals, and home and hospital visits are things you don’t learn in seminary and are really beneficial to learn about from someone who has done many.

I also think older ministers will find this book encouraging and therapeutic. Jared’s encouragement for those running the race and his reminders to those who may be feeling discouraged are so valuable. One of my favorite things he says is, “So, pray like your very life depends on it. Because it does” (194). Pastors need this reminder. We all do.

Ultimately, this book is labeled as an introduction to the calling and work of a pastor, but really it should be labeled as a handbook for pastors. Pastoral ministry is hard. It can be very discouraging. Results are not often seen. Pastors need encouragement. They need their eyes refocused on Christ. Jared C. Wilson has provided a tool that will prove valuable to many pastors for many years to come.
