My favorite Christmas movies are Home Alone 1 and 2. I love the mood, hi-jinks, and the fact that it’s a sweet family movie. There is one thing that plagues me however. What in the world did Kevin’s dad do for a living!? I mean, they live in a huge house and can apparently afford to pay for all of their extended family—which is huge—to go on vacation with them each year. The man is either incredibly wealthy or wildly irresponsible with his finances.
After reaching adulthood, we lose those parental constraints. We begin to have free reign of our lives, meaning we can do what we want when want where we want. If we want to blow all of our money, we can. If we want to eat until we feel sick, we can. Our only real limitations are those imposed by our job, credit score, and health. Otherwise, we are our own master.
I’m going to be more vulnerable today than I want to be. This is because I think this topic demands it. I want to talk about fear—namely, one of my biggest fears. One of my biggest fears, if I’m not careful, can move from fear to dread. It is something that is inevitable. What I fear will happen one day. It may be 20 years from now or it could be tomorrow, but it is coming.
As I grow older, I become more and more aware of just how much I sin as a Christian. Whether I sin by doing something I shouldn’t or sin by not doing something I should, there is not a day that goes by that I don’t miss the mark. While we can’t quit sinning in this life, our sin can serve us in our sanctification.
I sinned today. I sinned yesterday. I will sin tomorrow. As I grow older, I become more and more aware of just how much I need God’s grace and need the Holy Spirit to keep me. I become more aware of the depravity I was rescued from and just how deeply it penetrates my very nature. I will never graduate from being a sinner in this life.
I just recently mowed my lawn. You’re probably thinking, “Big deal. You have to do that.” When I’m done mowing the lawn, I like to look out over the yard and see the even-cut, short grass and it makes me feel accomplished. It makes me feel good. My yard that was once a mess now looks good and well cared for. It is just a lawn, but I like knowing that I made it look good.
For a Student Pastor, camp is kind of like the Super Bowl. To find a camp you actually look forward to is kind of like winning the jackpot. Last year, we went to Crossings Cedarmore and the students not only loved it, but I loved it. I actually looked forward to going back this year. I had plans. I had dreams. I had aspirations. I was pumped up!
I'd been encouraged to enjoy some fictional reading this summer and thought that sounded like a fun idea. However, I've had a lot of limited time to read lately so I thought this might best be accomplished through audio book. One book I decided might be good to read was Stephen King's It. Quite frankly, I don't enjoy scary movies, but many students in my youth group raved about it when it was released. I thought it might be good for me to know about it and that the book sounded like a safer way to experience King's tale. Boy, was I wrong.
When it comes to blogging, I feel like I've been in a dry spell lately. The ideas haven't been easily flowing. I have to stop and think about topics and diligently think to try and come up with something. Life has been really busy and finding time to write and read has been hard to do. Sometimes it would feel easier to just hang it up.
In Christianity, there can be different focuses when it comes to how we express our faith and ourselves. There are those who love to serve others and be involved with helping and missions. There are those who are passionate about evangelism and/or discipleship. There are also some who love learning, studying, and theology. Most likely many are a blend of these things.
Last night, our student ministry hosted it's first ever Nerf War. Games were played, fun was had, food was eaten, and lots of foam bullets whizzed and sailed. Many students had a good time and we got to engage a few new students that don't regularly come to our student ministry along the way…
