I love prayer books. I think it is because I always need more help with prayer. Several books of Puritan prayers have been released and every time I see a new one I want to check it out. The latest offering is called Into His Presence and it has been edited and arranged by Tim Chester and published by The Good Book Company. As soon as I saw it I knew it was a must have.
I've been a long time lover of the Valley of Vision. The Lord has used this collection of Puritan Prayers to encourage me, disciple me, and aid in my own prayer life. For a long time, the Valley of Vision only came in paperback or bonded leather, but recently Banner of Truth released this collection of prayers in both genuine leather and goatskin leather. Today I'm bringing you a comparison of these new editions and one old one.
The Valley of Vision almost needs no introduction. It’s a collection of Puritan prayers that is a long-time favorite for many including myself. Many people have used this collection devotionally and to aid in their own prayer life. These prayers are theologically rich, deep, beautiful, and inspiring. Up until very recently, you could get a copy of the The Valley of Vision in paperback or bonded leather. These prayers have become such a treasure to so many that it was only fitting for them to be bound in something that could withstand the frequent use the volume is sure to receive. When Banner of Truth announced The Valley of Vision was releasing in both genuine leather and goatskin, those of us who love these prayers couldn’t contain our excitement. I’m excited to have received a copy of the goatskin edition of The Valley of Vision from Westminster Books in exchange for a fair and honest review. We’ve all found ourselves on an interesting journey over the past months. Covid-19 turned the world upside down and has now become a pretty polarizing topic. It is especially polarizing as restrictions begin to get lifted and people begin to gather in public places again. Some take it very seriously while others don’t think it to be a big deal at all. What I’ve realized is that my prayers are very revealing of how my attitude regarding the pandemic is changing.

I’ve only recently started reading some works by the Puritans. However, I’ve been a fan of their prayers for quite some time. When you think about Puritan prayers, your mind most likely heads toward the classic The Valley of Vision. It has been the staple collection of Puritan prayers for some time now. I have enjoyed reading and praying through the prayers in The Valley of Vision. The depths of the prayers of the Puritans really makes an impact.
Prayer changes things. Namely, prayer has a profound and supernatural way of changing us. Prayer can be incredibly simple, but given the nature of it, can be hard to understand or master. That’s why I’m so excited about The ESV Prayer Bible from Crossway.
When Rachel and I were newly married with no kids, we'd go out on a date together every week. It was a great time for fun, laughter, romance, and intentional conversation. Being a pastor, I enjoy talking about theology and I'd often bring it up and talk with her about different things on our dates. However, I quickly found out that we had some sharp disagreements on some things and I'd usually press the issue too far and make her mad.
