The Mystery of Christ, His Covenant and His Kingdom by Samuel Renihan: A Book Review
One thing I don’t often hear discussed or mentioned very often in church life is the covenants found in the Bible. They may often be acknowledged, but they are not often taught. However, gaining an understanding of the covenants can help Christians appreciate the cohesive story and unity of Scripture. That’s why I appreciate Dr. Samuel Renihan’s new book, The Mystery of Christ, His Covenant and His Kingdom.
Dr. Samuel Renihan is married to his wife, Kimberly Renihan. They have a son named Owen. He is the pastor of Trinity Reformed Baptist Church in La Mirada, California. Dr. Renihan has authored several articles and books in English and Spanish including From Shadow to Substance: The Federal Theology of the English Particular Baptists and De Dios y su decreto.
First things first, this book is not necessarily an easy read, but it is an excellent read. Dr. Renihan explains the nature and structure of covenants. He shows the cohesive nature of the biblical covenants as each one builds upon another. I found the Dr. Renihan helped me connect the dots that I hadn’t put together and he helped me see more fully the beauty of the story of the Gospel.
I also love that this book comes from a Baptist perspective. We often hear the covenants talked about from a Presbyterian perspective, but we needed a book like this from a solid Baptist perspective. This book is academic and scholarly. You may have to work hard to really digest it. However, Dr. Renihan delivers his information clearly and has witty humor that will keep you wanting to read more. All in all, he exalts Jesus and helps us more fully understand why the gospel is such good news. You will not regret doing the hard work to take in this book. Understanding the covenants will help enlarge your perspective for the better. I highly recommend it.
