Adorning the Dark by Andrew Peterson: A Book Review
You are creative. You may find yourself immediately objecting to that statement. I know someone who used to tell me, “I’m just not creative like you are.” In the past, I might have agreed with them. However, I’ve gained a new perspective after reading Andrew Peterson’s Adorning the Dark: Thoughts on Community, Calling, and the Mystery of Making.
Andrew Peterson is an award-winning singer-songwriter and the author of The Wingfeather Saga. He’s the founder of a ministry called The Rabbit Room. He’s been married for twenty-four years to his wife Jamie. They have three children together.
Going into this book, I didn’t know what to expect. However, once I started, I was immediately captivated by Peterson’s writing. He writes in a way that draws you in and has the ability to make you feel nostalgia while longing for something more.
This book is a memoir of sorts giving you glimpses into Peterson’s life. All the while he’s teaching you about the creative process and what it takes. If you are someone who tries to create whether that’s through song, poem, pen and paper, or something else, Peterson will have you nodding your head saying to yourself, “Oh! I’m not alone in this. Someone else gets it.” If you are someone who thinks you’re not at all creative, I think Peterson will eventually change your mind and help you see yourself in light of who God created you to be.
All the while throughout the book, Peterson drops little spiritual nuggets. He may very well expand the way you see God and his interaction with his creation. He may change the way you see your purpose in life. You may close this book convinced that God made you creative to influence the world he’s placed you in for his mission and his purposes. I also have no doubt you’ll be convinced that this is a very good thing.
