Teach Me to Feel by Courtney Reissig
The Psalms are such an incredible book of the Bible. People use Psalms for all kinds of things. The wide range of emotions help us sing and pray no matter what season of life we may find ourselves in. They comfort us and let us know we aren’t alone. Sometimes they ground us in the truth amidst our chaotic feelings. Courtney Reissig says, “We need to learn how to feel Christianly” and in her new book, Teach Me to Feel: Worshiping Through the Psalms in Every Season of Life, she is going to show you how the Psalms help you do just that.
Courtney Reissig helps lead the women’s ministry at Midtown Baptist Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. She’s married to her husband, Daniel. They have four sons.
In this book, Reissig will take the reader through 22 Psalms that represent 22 emotions we all experience. She says, “I want us to walk together through our feelings, asking God, through the psalms, to teach us to feel—to see that we have permission to feel, to see that he gives us language for our feelings, and to understand how God shapes us in our feelings” (13). She says this book is meant to be read slowly and thoughtfully. There is even a section after each Psalm for journaling, which is a nice touch. Feelings in the book range from despair to envy to full of praise.
When first picking it up, I didn’t realize this book was marketed to women. Although men can feel differently at times, I still think it is a great read for men too. The God who made women to feel also did the same for men. This book has a built in ribbon bookmark, which is a nice feature adding to the devotional content that Reissig shares.
Sometimes our feelings can be liars. Teach Me to Feel will teach the reader to feel “Christianly” grounding our feelings in the truth and feelings of the Psalms.
