The ESV Devotional Psalter in Top Grain Leather
The Psalms are such a staple in the Bible. In them, we get the full range of human emotion. We get so much depth and insight into the Lord in the Psalms. We could spend the rest of our lives in the Psalms alone and never fully mine the riches contained within. I love the Psalms and I’m excited to bring you a unique review today from the good people at Crossway. The ESV Devotional Psalter is a beautiful edition of the Psalms that also includes a devotion from Dane Ortlund for each Psalm.
I’m reviewing the top grain edition. This edition has a beautiful, deep black grain. It has a perimeter tooled line wrapping around the edge. The spine has gold foil stamping with the ESV logo, "DEVOTIONAL PSATER" and "CROSSWAY" written horizontally. There is a single black ribbon bookmark and the page edges are white.
The Psalter is edge-lined with a calfskin liner. The paper is thick and cream colored. It reminds me of what you’d see in a reader’s edition. I don’t know the gsm, but it seems like the paper you’d find in a regular book (maybe thicker).
Crossway describes the font in this edition as an 11-point Bembo type. It is easy on the eyes and reads very well. Each chapter stands out in a maroon color and the verse numbers also appear in maroon. There’s also a maroon symbol indicating where the Psalm ends and the devotion begins. At the bottom of each page is the Psalm number as well as the theme of the Psalm.
Dane Ortlund has contributed a devotion at the end of each Psalm in this Psalter. I enjoy Ortlund as a writer and he is excellent in these devotions as well. He explains the Psalm, applies it to our lives, and points us to God. Each of these devotions is certainly worth working through.
I also love the generous margins in this Psalter. If you’re a note taker, you will certainly like this feature.
The ESV Devotional Psalter is a great resource to keep the Psalms with you in a beautiful format. Ortlund will help you understand them better and apply them to your life. The top grain version is sure to last a lifetime and a great investment if you, like me, find yourself going back to the Psalms again and again.
