Systematic Theology by Louis Berkhof - Expanded Edition

For a long time, I’d only heard of one Systematic Theology and I bet you can guess which one. Often, in theology classes, Grudem’s Systematic seems to be the only volume that is ever referenced or pushed. It is no surprise that many are only aware of that volume. However, there are better volumes out there!

One such volume, which I believe to be the best, is Louis Berkhof’s Systematic Theology. Professor Berkhof died in 1957 at age 83, but his Systematic Theology lives on to bless the church. What makes the edition I”m reviewing today particularly exciting is that it is a new, expanded edition that includes Berkhof’s Introductory Volume to Systematic Theology, which is meant to be read along with it.

The new Introductory Volume is going to give you 200 pages of more content! To me, this alone is worth the upgrade if you have an older volume of Berkhof. This is a work you’re going to reference time and time again. It’s a work that I even recommend reading through in a year devotionally. Berkhof has a way of expounding on the incredible vastness of God that is not just informational, but devotional. I believe this Systematic Theology will cause you to marvel and expand your adoration of the God who has saved you.

Berkhof writes from a Reformed perspective so this Systematic Theology will expound in light of that tradition. This volume has been refined over several editions. It’s clear, beneficial, and undoubtedly spiritual. I highly recommend investing in this Systematic Theology because I think you will use it so much. Not only will you use it, but Berkhof will point you to other great theologians— namely Kuyper and Bavinck. Another benefit of Berkhof is the included questions at the end of each section. This make this a great resource to use and grow with others!
