Total Bible Transformation from Resurrection Rebinding
At this point, I’ve been blessed to handle a lot of rebinds, but I may be most impressed by the one I’m about to share. This isn’t just a rebind. It’s a complete transformation! I asked Neil McCauley at Resurrection Rebinding to take my hardcover LSB Wide Margin and give it the premium treatment. The results are stunning and I can’t believe it’s the same Bible! Let’s take a closer look at this total transformation.
I don’t often start reviews with page edges, but this may be the most stunning point of the transformation. As most hardcovers do, my LSB had page edges like a typical book. They are sharp corners or you might call them squared corners. Softcover Bibles have rounded corners and the cover itself is rounded. Putting a softcover on a hardcover just wouldn’t look right with the page corners. So Neil took my hardcover and rounded all the page corners to make it look right with the amazing cover (more on that soon) that he was about to put on it.
Not only that, but my Bible started with plain white page edges and Neil dyed them a royal blue for me. It looks incredible and once again, it is hard to believe this is the same Bible.
That royal blue pops against the black antique horsehide cover that I asked for. The antique horsehide is really interesting. It has great grain, which you can see a little better in person than in the pictures, but I did try and capture it. It has a nice sheen to it and feels really smooth. While Horween has been all the rage, the horsehide looks classy and keeps the character you start with. It doesn’t patina like Horween, but has a really elegant look and smooth feel. I am really impressed by it and Neil told me that it is his favorite leather. I appreciate his recommendation and I’m glad I tried it. The black shine contrasted with the blue stitching and page edges really pops!
Speaking of, I asked him to do a matching royal blue perimeter stitching. It’s a really eye-catching look against the black cover and looks even better on the full yapp. These little details are one reason I love Bible rebinds. Companies like Resurrection will take into account each little detail about your Bible and will make it uniquely yours. You don’t get this level of customization anywhere else.
The spine of this Bible has five raised hubs. Being a hardcover initially, I wanted to keep the spine simple, but also do something I’ve never gotten to do. Many Bibles have gold page edges and for a uniform look, you really want to have your spine stamped in gold. Because my page edges ended up being blue, I really wanted Neil to stamp my spine in silver. I love the silver look, but it typically doesn’t happen for me on rebinds. In silver, the spine has “HOLY BIBLE”, “LSB”, and the cool dove Resurrection Rebinding logo. I love the way the silver looks on the black and I’m really grateful to Neil for having the opportunity to do it like this.
More little details of this rebind include black leather head and tail bands, four beautiful Berisford ribbon bookmarks in shades of blue and black, and tooled perimeter line on the cover that adds some depth to the sheen of the horsehide. I also would miss an opportunity if I didn’t mention the corner work. Neil’s corners look fantastic and elegant. You never see these types of corners from big publishers. It really is the little details that make rebinds so special.
Inside, is a thick and soft royal blue lamb skin liner. I love the look of this against the black and it really ties the whole Bible together. It also feels so soft and amazing! Another impressive little detail is that Neil took my hardcover and edge-lined it to increase its strength and durability. I also love the endsheets Neil chose. They have a swirled design of colors that really ties all the details of the Bible together. I didn’t ask him for these, but I love that he went bold and used a design rather than just a plain color!
I’ll note a few last things. I love the small touches Neil includes with his rebinds. He sent me a handwritten card with the Bible and that personal touch was really special. He also includes instructions for taking care of the Bible. This Bible did arrive a bit stiff, but Neil sends instructions for breaking it in and after doing what he recommends a couple of times, I have noticed a big difference.
Everything about the work from Resurrection Rebinding has blown me away. That someone can take a hardcover and transform it into what you see in these pictures is mind blowing. It is total artistry. If you’re looking to do the impossible with your Bible, I highly recommend you hit up Neil over at Resurrection Rebinding.
