The ESV Men's Study Bible
If we’re honest, it’s been past time for men to step up in the church. God created men to lead and for far too long we have shunned that role. Good leadership starts with knowing and following God, which is why I’m excited to talk about the new ESV Men’s Study Bible from Crossway.
I’m reviewing the hardcover edition. It comes with a nice dust jacket, but honestly my dustjacket was damaged so I just threw it out. They typically get in the way when you’re in a book a lot anyway. The hardcover itself is a nice two tone cloth over board and has one ribbon bookmark. It says “MEN”S STUDY BIBLE” in large white letters on the spine.
The helps in this Bible are written by men of God for men seeking God. There are so many contributors here that I can’t list them all, but I’m excited about so many of the names. Some include R. Kent Hughes, Graeme Goldsworthy, Alistair Begg, Dane Ortlund, Greg Gilbert, Joe Thorn, Jared C. Wilson, Jim Hamilton, and many more.
All kinds of topics directed toward men are being covered here. Topics include a man’s identity, inner life, and work. Marriage, fathering, leadership, pornography, doubt, and many more are covered in article form. Each chapter has book introductions as well as helps for understanding the book as a whole. Essays from the various authors are also included throughout the pages of Scripture.
The layout is set in a double column format with an 8.2 font size. Study notes are in a double column at the bottom with cross references in the bottom right hand corner. In the back is a glossary, reading plan, concordance, and maps. To cap it all off, there’s artwork from Peter Voth throughout the Bible.
This is what I would consider a great, all-inclusive offering for men. With Scripture notes as well as articles directed toward men and applied toward men, this Bible is a great and useful tool that would be great for any man to have.
