Well, I did something that I never imagined myself doing—I watched a Taylor Swift documentary. My history with Miss Swift is pretty interesting. I actually saw her perform live in 2010 at the NFL Kickoff Party in New Orleans. The Saints won the Super Bowl the year before so New Orleans hosted the party. Tickets were free so I gladly went. The real attraction was that the Dave Matthews Band was playing afterward.
I made my way through several books in 2019 and enjoyed much of what I read. At the beginning of the new year, I try and compile a list of what I thought were the best I read for the year. Adoption is a topic that has become near and dear to my wife and I’s heart. Since being married, we have had the hunch that adoption is in our future. We’ve known people who have been adopted and spent considerable time with them. Even more, adoption is a visible picture of what God does for us in Christ.
When was the last time you were completely in awe of God? When was the last time that you just felt floored by his hugeness, his magnitude, and his otherness? As humans, we often want to bring God down to our level. We want to be able to explain everything about him or we try and make him fit into our categories rather than realizing that he is a category in himself. I’m a slow reader by anyone’s measure. I’m not the person who can finish a book in a day. I am the person who may have to re-read a paragraph two or three times to get it. Sometimes reading can feel like work.
Over the weekend, my family and I went to a nice, little town in Tennessee for a birthday celebration. It wasn’t a perfect trip, but no trip ever is. We had a good time. We often talk about being sinners from birth. We inherit our sinful nature from our parents—it’s part of being human. Ultimately, we inherit it from Adam and Eve. We say that we aren’t sinners because we sin, but we sin because we are sinners. It’s our nature. It’s a fundamental part of who we are. This is why the gospel is such good news.
