Thomas Nelson has really been stepping up their game in the premium Bible department. I’ve recently come to love and appreciate the New King James Version as a translation and I’ve also discovered a love for Bibles in the verse-by-verse page layout. That’s why I jumped at the opportunity to review Thomas Nelson’s Premier Collection NKJV Verse-by-Verse Center-Column Reference Bible.

Jumping right in, this Bible has black goatskin leather with perimeter stitching. The spine has five raised hubs and the words Holy Bible, New King James Version, and Thomas Nelson are printed in gold. The Bible has three satin ribbon bookmarks with two being black and one being red. One thing I love about Thomas Nelson’s bookmarks are the width and length. These bookmarks 3/8-inch wide. This means they’re slightly wider than a number 2 pencil. They also are longer than many of the premium Bible bookmarks I see and I think this adds a level of elegance to the Bible. The pages edges have a red under gold gilt.

The inside cover is edge lined and has a gold gilt line. The best I can tell, the inside cover is a synthetic material, but this still allows for ample flexibility and feels great to the touch. I’ve seen some seller websites describing this Bible with generous yapp. While it does have a small amount of yapp, I would not describe it as generous. The yapp on this Bible will not fold around the page edges so I’d say it has the minimum yapp. The Bible is also smyth-sewn as you’d expect any premium Bible to be.

Inside, you’ll find a presentation page, a Table of Contents, and a page with the “Preface to the New King James Version”. Each book in this Bible begins with an introduction. The pages are double column with references in a small, third center column in between columns, which essentially makes it a triple column Bible. I personally prefer references in the outer margin, bottom corner, or blocked off creating a footer at the bottom. The triple column format is my least favorite layout, but this is preferential on my part and I would assume there are plenty of people who like it laid out this way.

The text is a 10 point font called Comfort Print, which was designed for Thomas Nelson. The text has a nice black hue with words of Christ in red as well as chapter and verse numbers and headings in a red accent. I think color wise that these are very attractive choices on the part of Thomas Nelson. The text is also line-matched. The paper itself is a 36 gsm Premium European Bible Paper that has minimal ghosting. I really do love the font in this Bible. The 10 point is a really nice size and the text is really crisp and seems to jump off the page. This Bible is truly an easy reader. In the back of the Bible you’ll find a Concordance and maps.

All in all, Thomas Nelson has produced a really nice Bible here at a great price. If I preached from New King James, this would be my Bible of choice. It’s not too big or too small and the font is great for reading and teaching. Thomas Nelson’s Premier Collection continues to impress me and seems to be getting better and better.
