Hi.

Welcome to my blog. I mostly write about Christian Living, but I enjoy the Kentucky Wildcats, New Orleans Saints, and a good cup of coffee.

The Thomas Nelson NKJV Preaching Bible

No matter what translation your church uses, if you’re a preacher, a good preaching Bible is a must. Typically, I think a good preaching Bible utilizes a verse-by-verse format. Some folks like preaching from a paragraph edition and others who are just reading like verse-by-verse. One size doesn’t fit all, but either way, the NKJV Preaching Bible from Thomas Nelson that I’m reviewing today is worth your attention.

This Bible comes in a beautiful red and black clamshell box that’s really attractive. The box really struck me regarding this edition and I am big on packaging. Thomas Nelson designed it really well.

The Bible itself is a black calfskin. It feels really nice and has more flex in hand than I’m used to from a calfskin edition. It is perimeter stitched. It has gold foil stamping on the spine with the words "HOLY BIBLE", "NKJV", and "Thomas Nelson". There are also five gold stamped double bars instead of spine hubs. The spine is simple, but classy.

The page edges have gold gilt and there are three single-sided stain ribbons. I love the ribbon size Thomas Nelson uses. They are both wider and longer than most Bible publishers use and I think they look more classy. I also love they use three different colors, which make them more useful for preaching. There is a black, red, and blue ribbon. The Bible is Smith-sewn.

Inside the Bible is edge-lined. It has a black synthetic liner. My copy doesn’t lay flat in Genesis, but probably would with some breaking in. There is a nice, full color presentation page. Some pages stuck together on the bottom at the beginning of this Bible including the presentation page. When I pulled it apart, it caused part of the color at the bottom to come off. This isn’t a big deal to me because this Bible is fairly priced and made to be used, but I figured I’d mention it. There is a preface at the beginning.

Quite frankly, what I really care about in a preaching Bible is the text block and this text block is honestly amazing. Thomas Nelson has done it right. It is a verse-by-verse layout. The text is line-matched. It has a stunning 11.5 point font in Thomas Nelson’s NKJV Comfort Print type setting. I love the comfort print. It’s easy on the eyes and beautiful to look at. The verse numbers are in a teal color. I think having different colored verse numbers is so helpful in a verse-by-verse preaching Bible and it really helps the preacher. Page headings, section headings, chapter numbers, and reference numbers are all also in this teal color. References are located at the bottom of the page in a smaller font. The text is all black (which I really like).

The paper is a a nice white. I will say that it looks thick and there’s little to no ghosting. It’s a 36 gsm, but I’d think it was thicker. It’s really nice paper for a preaching Bible. There are no extras in this Bible except quite a bit of lined paper in the back, which is also a really nice feature for a preacher’s Bible.

In summary, this is an amazing Bible from Thomas Nelson. I would’ve loved to see spine ribs and calfskin liner on this Bible, but honestly this Bible has an amazing price for what you get and I can’t complain. If I preached from the NKJV, this would be the one I preached from. I also love verse-by-verse settings in general and if you’re the same way, you will love this Bible. The text block is amazing and this in an incredible offering from Thomas Nelson. Make sure to check out a couple of comparison pictures below.
