Gentle and Lowly by Dane Ortlund
I may be jumping the gun by calling this book an instant classic, but I don't think so. This is a unique and important book for our time. Dane Ortlund’s Gentle and Lowly, I believe, is an instant classic that people will read for years to come.
This book is all about the heart of Christ. Ortlund says, "the strategy of this book will simply be to take either a Bible passage or a bit of teaching from the Puritans or others and consider what is being said about the heart of God and of Christ." He goes on to say, "We are not focusing centrally on what Christ has done. We are considering who he is."
I love that the chapters in this book are short. There are 23 chapters and each one can easily be read in one sitting. This means that this book is great to use devotionally or in a book club or in your traditional reading context. While short, each chapter is full of depth. As Ortlund examines who Jesus is, the reader is brought face to face with a loving Savior ready to provide rest for weary and troubled hearts.
Ortlund examines Scripture to explore the heart of Christ. He shows how many of us have wrong perceptions of how Christ feels towards us. He takes our assumptions and turns them on their head. He peels back the curtain to show us who Jesus for those whom he has saved. Going even further, he shows us that Jesus’s heart is more fully revealing of the heart of the Father.
I think this book will make a big impact. After reading it, I find myself frequently thinking about who Jesus is and how he loves me. I think it is a book that you will pick up and read time and time again. It is an instant classic.
