The NASB95 Thinline Passagio Setting
I didn’t expect to like the Bible I’m reviewing today. It was sent to me and I’m not sure I would have ever asked for it. Boy, am I glad they sent it because I like it way more than I expected.
The NASB Large Print Thinline in the Passagio Setting melds a unique layout into a slim package with a large font. If you’ve ever wanted a thin (mostly) single column Bible that’s very readable then this is the Bible you’re looking for. Spoiler alert: it’s awesome.
The black Leathersoft on this Bible actually feels really nice. It’s flexible and has a really nice grain pattern on it. I’ve said it before, but fake leather is getting really, really good. The spine has four gold lines printed on it. There is also a diamond outline in gold around the words “HOLY BIBLE.” Also in gold on the spine are “NASB” and the Zondervan logo.
The page edges on this Bible are gold. There are black head and tail bands. There are also two narrow single sided satin ribbons. One is black and the other is gold. I love Zondervan’s higher end ribbons and I wish they had went all out with their ribbons even on a more budget friendly edition.
Inside is a grey paper liner with matching presentation page.
The text itself is in the Passagio setting. Meaning that it’s a single column setting that transitions to double column when there is poetry. I personally really like this layout. What unique feature to this NASB is that it is a paragraph layout. Many NASB layouts are verse-by-verse, but this one is paragraph, which makes it a nice reader!
This is a large print and I’m happy to say it’s actually large print! The text size is an 11 point in Zondervan’s NASB Comfort Print typeface. Also, a very nice feature is that this edition is line matched. My biggest complaint is that words of Christ are red in this edition. Unfortunately, it also seems the red printing is inconsistent with some sections being a darker red than others. This is one reason I generally prefer an all black letter text.
There are a few helpful tables in the back including “Miracles of Jesus”, “Parables of Jesus”, etc. I’m also really happy to report that there are no maps in this Bible! For me, that’s a plus, but some will be disappointed.
All in all I think this is a great Bible. A large print, single column thinline is almost a unicorn, but that’s essentially what you get here. I think the combination of a paragraph setting rather than verse-by-verse and the Passagio Setting creating double columns in poetry made this beauty possible. I like this Bible way more than I thought I would and if you’re a single column fan who likes large print then you’ll want to snag one of these… or maybe two.
