Knowing and Enjoying God by Tim Challies and Jules Koblun
Tim Challies is the name of the game when it comes to Christian blogging. He does it full time and his site boasts many features including book reviews, daily articles he shares from other blogs, and his own original writing. I’ve even been blessed to be featured on occasion on his daily “A La Carte” where he shares articles from other bloggers around the internet.
One thing Challies has been doing for years is something he calls “SquareQuotes”. These are images with a quote laid over them and look like something you see on social media. Chalies has paired up with designer and illustrator Jules Koblun to create these images and they are a source of encouragement and inspiration for many.
Challies and Koblun have teamed up with Harvest House Publishers to release these “SquareQuotes” in book form. Alongside each quote is a devotion from Challies. This book is hardcover and would make a great coffee table book. It would also make a great daily devotional book to walk through.
Although this book is a collection of beautiful images, it is laid out intentionally. In the Introduction, Challies speaks of this book being structured around “the means of grace.” He goes on to say, “The means of grace are the habits we engage in through which we speak to God and he speaks to us, through which we listen to God and he listens to us.” Thus they are organized with reading the Bible, prayer, and gathering as the local church in mind.
Challies is a great writer. I found his devotions to be both encouraging and robustly theological. Even so, they are written in a very accessible way. Great writers can simplify the complex and Challies does just that. All kinds of people will enjoy this book. I’m always looking for solid devotional material to recommend and Knowing and Enjoying God may have just jumped to the top of the list.
