The Premier Colelction NASB Grace and Truth Study Bible
Can I be honest with you? I think Study Bibles are hard to review and are rarely worth the effort it takes to review them. Wow… I can’t believe I actually wrote that. That being said, The Grace and Truth Study Bible from Zondervan is absolutely incredible. It is the reason I keep reviewing Study Bibles. In fact, it has made it into my top two Study Bibles and I find it an incredibly valuable resource.
Even more, when Zondervan releases it in the NASB translation in their Premier Collection, it becomes not just a Study Bible, but an heirloom that will stand the test of time and that you will want to pass down for generations. The NASB Grace and Truth Study Bible is edited by R. Albert Mohler, Jr. and I am reviewing the Premier Collection edition.
This comes wrapped in a nice lighter brown goatskin. It’s soft and has a nice semi yapp for the cover. I love seeing Zondervan going for more yapp on some of their Bibles! The Bible has five raised spine hubs. Also on the spine stamped in gold is “NASB GRACE & TRUTH STUDY BIBLE”, “NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE”, and “ZONDERVAN”. There are black head and tail bands as well as three wide and long, double-sided satin ribbon bookmarks in red, light brown, and dark brown. The art gilt is unique. Sometimes it’s a maroon under gold and sometimes I see it almost as a purple under gold. .
The art gilt color is very interesting seeing as the show stopper of this Bible is the liner. The liner is a bright red calfskin with matching vinyl end sheets. When I say bright, I mean bright! It’s a stunner and pairs nicely with the brown. There’s also a gold perimeter gilt line inside. The Bible is Smyth-sewn and edge-lined in construction for increased durability.
As we get into the meat, let me clarify that this Bible is the NASB 95 edition. I know differentiating between the 95 and 2020 is important to a lot of folks so I wanted to make that clear.
While I am a Baptist, I should note that the contributions in this Bible are not all from Baptists. I could see that being easily assumed since Dr. Albert Mohler—President of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary—is the General Editor. You get the list of contributors at the beginning of the Bible and you’ll find an impressive list of great scholars. Study Bibles are all about content and the content certainly isn’t lacking here.
According to the introduction, the goal of this Bible is to help readers “learn to see grace and truth revealed on every page of God’s Word.” It goes on to say, “This study Bible will benefit new believers who are looking to understand the Christian faith for the first time, and it will help maturing Christians who are eager to dig deeper into biblical truth.”
The page layout is very nice. It has a double column layout for both Scripture and study notes. It uses a tan/copper accent color for page headings, section headings, chapter numbers, line dividers, and verse numbers for cross references. There are center column cross references marked out by vertical lines running down the page. There are also textual in the bottom right corner of the Scripture section of the page. Below those are more cross references if there is need for more room for them. Also of note is that poetry sections are versified in a poetic setting.
The font for Scripture is a 9 point in the NASB Comfort Print and the study notes are probably about an 8 or 7.5 point font. The font really looks great in this Bible. The text is black letter and I’m so glad. In my hardback copy, the words of Christ are in red and it clashes very badly with the accent color of this Bible. The black letter looks great though and it helps this Bible keep that premium feel.
From what I’ve read, the book introductions and notes in this Bible are fantastic. Both new believers and seasoned Christians will find themselves benefiting from the content on these pages. I’ve referenced this Bible countless times in my own study and each time I typically find it to have better insights that are more beneficial to my study than other Study Bibles I reference. Full disclaimer, this content does have a Reformed leaning and it is stated in the introduction. “This project is graciously evangelical, Reformed, and complementarian.” You should know what you’re getting here and I want to help you do that.
In the back you’ll find a Concordance and Maps sections. Both are quite helpful in a Study Bible.
I highly recommend this Study Bible. Many times, if I have a question about a text that I want to try and answer quickly, this is the Bible I am reaching for. Zondervan makes it many different bindings, but you won’t find nicer than the Premier Collection and I don’t think you’ll regret going for it!
