The CSB Handcrafted Spurgeon Study Bible
I’ve had a CSB Spurgeon Study Bible in hardcover for some time. I’m a huge Charles Spurgeon fan and I love that the CSB paired his notes and sermons with the text. I think it’s about time the Prince of Preachers received the Handcrafted—premium—treatment. So without further ado, here is my review of the CSB Handcrafted Spurgeon Study Bible.
Starting out, you get the typical things you expect from a CSB Handcrafted Bible. The box and packaging is the standard Handcrafted material and the Bible itself is in usual form. But I just want to say that this Bible is beautiful! The gilt is flawless. The leather has a nice, deep grain. Everything about this one is just immaculate.
This is a black goatskin Bible with red under gold art gilt. You get the three double-sided satin ribbons in orange, gold, and black. The spine has tooled lines. The CSB logo, “HOLY BIBLE”, “CHRISTIAN STANDARD BIBLE”, and “HOLMAN” are all in gold on the spine. I think it would have been really cool if they had the Spurgeon signature on the spine of this one as well. It would have really set it off.
Inside you get a black calf liner and a gold perimeter gilt line. the Bible is Smyth-sewn and edge lined for durability.
I love the front page of this one that has the Spurgeon signature. It’s really cool. I also like that Alistair Berg is the General Editor. I actually didn’t realize that until checking out this Bible a b it more closely.
The paper in this one is a high quality Bible paper. They don’t list a gsm, but based on what I can tell, it seems to be about a 32 or 36 gsm. The type size is a nice 10.75 and you get a nice green accent color in this Bible. It should be noted that this Bible has been updated to the 2020 text.
As the name implies, this Bible is all about Spurgeon. If you’re a fan of the Prince of Preachers then you’re going to love the extra content in this Bible. You get an introductory biography, study note commentary that has been created from Spurgeon’s sermons, Sermon illustrations that are near the relevant biblical text , sermon notes and outlines that are in Spurgeon’s own handwriting, Spurgeon quotes throughout the text, and book introductions and overviews by Spurgeon. There’s a lot of helpful material here and I must mention again just how nice the Handcrafted edition of this Bible is.
The back features a Concordance and maps.
If you’re a Spurgeon fan then you’re going to love this Bible. To be honest, I didn’t reach for my hardcover edition too often, but I can see myself referencing this Handcrafted edition over and over again. I love what Holman has done with this one.
