Which Brother are You?

Most people are familiar with "The Parable of the Prodigal Son." We don't often realize though that Jesus didn't name the parable. Really, we should call this the parable of the prodigal sons or the parable of the loving father. Either way, I think we all relate to either one son or the other.

Pride

One of my worst fears is becoming a Pharisee. I'm prone to pride. I know the Bible pretty well and at times it can be easy for me to feel like I have it all figured out. I can easily get way too hung up on my head knowledge and leave out the heart and devotion of following Jesus.

Grow Smaller

I’ve seen it or head about it too many times. Someone new comes into an already overcrowded Sunday School class or small group only to feel overwhelmed and left out. Their chances of pushing through aren’t high. If they’re an introvert, they won’t feel like it’s worth the effort. If they’re an extrovert, they may fight a bit, but will eventually feel unneeded. Discipleship sacrificed because of either a push for numbers or a lack of trained, confident leaders.

Movies and the Gospel

Summer is the season of movies! Whether it's the experience of the theater or gathering everyone up on the couch at home, everyone loves a good movie. Movies tell stories that evoke strong emotions in us. Today, movies have special effects that wow us. In some cases, movies are a way we escape the reality of day to day life.

Sunday Struggles

Satan hates Sundays. I'm convinced of it. Sunday is what we Christians refer to as the Lord's Day. Why wouldn't satan hate a day that is all about the Lord? He absolutely despises God's people gathering as God's place to sing God's praise. Sunday is the sweetest day of the week, but often for me feels like one of the hardest days of the week.

Keep Death in Mind

Over the past several days, I've been thinking a lot about my death. One day we will all die, but that's not something we like to consider or ponder. It's probably because it is a sad thing to contemplate, but I would argue that it is something we need have on our minds more often. We are temporal creatures and we are not promised to see another day.

Obsessed with Royalty

Last week the Royal Wedding took place. Whether you cared or not, it was all over social media. There were posts by people on both sides. Some were gushing and some were mocking. There were those debating about the details that went into it. Some thought it was elegantly simple and others thought it was simply horrific (I only know these things because of conversations I overheard by others).

Love Thy Singles

I think there is a group of people though that many church families have tragically neglected: singles. People can be single for all types of reasons. Some reasons include it being their choice and others do not. Either way, these people need family and I believe that God calls us as the church to be their family. I don't mean just on Sundays and Wednesdays. I am talking about every day of the week.

Husbands, Date Your Wives

Do you remember when you first started dating that person who is now your significant other? I bet you do. I remember it clearly. I would leave my parents' house and pull into her driveway. I had spent time getting ready in hopes she would think I was attractive. Earlier in the week I had spent significant time thinking through what we do when this moment arrived.

Shepherd Dad

I have one daughter who is one and a half years old. That being said, you can take everything I'm about to say with a grain of salt because my experiences are quite limited thus far. One thing I do know however, is that God has called dads to be the primary shepherds of their children. I hope the following content may serve to encourage you and at least start as a jumping off point for you (if you're a dad) to assume the role of shepherd or for you (if you're a mom) to lovingly encourage your husband to lead.

Meditate, Gaze, and Wonder at the Majesty of God

Lately, I have been thinking about day to day life and the sovereignty of God. I'm on year 31 of my life and God has kept me safe by in large. When I drive in a metal box down the interstate somewhere between 75-80 miles per hour with other metal boxes all around me and I arrive to my destination safely, that is reason for amazement. When I go thousands of miles somewhere in a metal tube that logically has no business being in the air, that is reason for wonder.

Family Worship with a One Year Old

My daughter is one and a half years old. She is like the Flash. She doesn't stop moving! She's high energy, runs everywhere she goes, and if she slows down then something is typically wrong. She makes other kids her age look like they are moving in slow motion. Naturally, this comes with some difficulties.
