Reformed Systematic Theology Volume 3
Nothing beats a good Systematic Theology in my opinion. There’s so much to learn and it can truly be a devotional reading experience. I think the term “Systematic Theology” along with the size of the volumes naturally intimidates people, but it really shouldn’t. Read a short bit at a time and think through it then repeat. Eventually you will have read the whole volume. All that being said, I am excited for Volume Three of Reformed Systematic Theology from Joel Beeke and Paul Smalley.
As stated this is Volume Three of a four volume set. This volume examines the Holy Spirit and salvation. It explores the Lord’s direct activity in believers’ lives for their salvation. Honestly, this is an important subject and will be of great value to all believers and not just those who identify under the banner of “Reformed”.
What I appreciate most about this volume is the emphasis of the Holy Spirit. I feel that the Spirit is often neglected in the preaching in certain circles and even in discipleship. However, he is a very important part of the Christian life. We would do well to regain a balance of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. This volume looks at the Holy Spirit himself and also his role in salvation. No stone is left unturned here, Beeke and Smalley look at calling, regeneration, conversion, justification, adoption sanctification, and preservation. I also love that they take it a step further and look at the application of the Spirit in the lives of believers. This is truly a full treatment of the subject and one much needed I’d argue!
In my opinion, Volume Three concerning the Spirit and salvation may be the most important and helpful volume in this set. The Spirit does not have a minor role in the Godhead and we as believers would do well to understand the vital part he plays in our lives. I appreciate greatly what Smalley and Beeke are bringing to the table in Reformed Systematic Theology Volume Three.
