The Works of Thomas Goodwin

I’m sure many of us have been made aware of the Puritan Thomas Goodwin thanks to Dane Ortlund’s popular Gentle and Lowly. Goodwin is a deep thinker and has words that feel like medication to the soul. Reformation Heritage Books has recently released a new collection of The Works of Thomas Goodwin making his writings accessible to the masses.

I received a copy of the set and am excited to show a lot of pictures as well as tell you about the contents. Goodwin’s writings are vast and deep making this set a treasure for your library. Not only that, but Reformation Heritage has packaged this set in such a way that it will look great sitting on your bookshelf.

This is a twelve volume hardback set. It’s a grey cloth over board with each volume being highlighted on the spine in a maroon vinyl with gold stamping. Stamped in gold are the works contained within that volume. One thing Reformation Heritage has done that I actually kind of like is that the contents of the twelve volumes is on the liner in the front and back of every edition. I hadn’t seen this done before, but I find it really useful because I’m always wanting easy access to locating the specific writing I’m interested in in sets like these.

These volumes contain 33 works/sermons plus indexes. This is truly a treasure trove for your library. I love the thick, cream paper inside these books, but I do wish the type was a bit larger. The print is nice and dark, but I can see reading these editions becoming a struggle for aging eyes. I could see a digital edition becoming a great help for folks in the future. 

Goodwin’s works contain his insights on different books of the Bible, his discussion of certain theological topics, sermons, and more. These volumes will not only include sermon helps and study, but also much personal benefit to those who choose to do the deep dive into Goodwin’s writing. 

You’re going to want to grab a copy of these. We’ve been given so much from the Lord in the writings of these saints who have gone before us. Let’s not waste the gift and let’s invest in ourselves and invest in others through the gifts of the Lord.
