In our current culture, many statues are being removed that are especially related to racism. People are moving quickly from one thing to the next in this "cancel culture". It did not take long for people to move toward religious statues—even statues of Christ. Some are outraged by this, but many are rightly asking, "Should those statues have ever been put up in the first place?"
When I was younger, I often felt like none of my friends took initiative. I felt as though I kept the friendship going and if we were going to get together or hang out, it would be through my doing. I wanted to go and stay at other people’s houses. I wanted to be invited to go places with them and do things they were doing. However, it seemed that most of the time, I was doing the inviting.
To find a verse-by-verse layout in the New International Version is apparently a hard task, but the good people at Zondervan have said, "No more!" The newest addition to their Premier Collection is the Preacher's Bible in verse-by-verse format. This Bible is geared toward the preacher and teacher and will serve them well as they share God's Word.
I know all the right answers. I grew up in church, participated in Bible drill, went to a Christian college where I minored in religion, and graduated from a respectable seminary. I promise I can give you the right answers—and if I can’t—I can find them for you. All the head knowledge in the world, however, does not help produce one ounce of heart knowledge. Having all the right answers does not change my heart or my actions.
As a parent of two little girls who are one and three, I’m a really big fan of coffee. Coffee is like gas for my engine in the mornings. It gets my motor running and ready to face the day. I often try and squeeze a little too much personal time out of the night after the girls are in bed and then I try and wake up early to get a little more. Coffee is like a magic elixir that can bring me from “dead in the bed” to functioning human. It’s truly an amazing gift from the Lord!
I love journaling Bibles. In fact, they’re the only Bibles I feel totally uninhibited to write in. For some time, it seemed that the ESV had the market cornered on journaling Bibles, but that is quickly changing and that’s a really good thing. Journaling Bibles, in my opinion, may be some of the best wide margin Bibles out there—especially if they come in single column.
I've always found it fascinating that many people call themselves Christians, but seem to have no hunger for Christ. They profess faith in the God of the Universe, but they don't seem to really want to know him. I mean, it would seem that if you were going to follow and pledge your life to a deity that you would at least want to read his Book and know what's in there. There is certainly faith involved in Christianity, but it is not a blind faith.
I love Cambridge Bibles and they make some of my favorite editions! The Topaz and the Clarion have become favorites for me and so I'm excited to have the opportunity to review another Bible from them. Today I'm reviewing their Wide Margin Reference Bible. The particular Bible I'm reviewing is the ESV in Black Goatskin and Red Letter. I should also note that the edition I'm reviewing was printed in 2019 and uses the 2016 ESV text. They make this Bible in a plethora of options including Goatskin and black letter, hardback, and calfsplit. They also make it in several different translations.
When I seriously began reading the Bible for myself, I started with the New American Standard Bible Translation. I loved it, but then came the English Standard Version. The ESV was marketed so well that I made the switch and never looked back. Zondervan's acquisition of rights to print the NASB has brought a resurgence! I have jumped back in to the translation that started it all for me and I've really been enjoying it.
Sutro Footwear is a company based in San Francisco, California. They sell both men's and women's footwear and they make some awesome boots! Sutro boots are built to last and are specifically geared to look better with age. I reviewed Sutro's Alder previously, which you can read about here. Today I'm reviewing the Charlton. Does it continue the trend of that great Sutro experience?
I wish I owned every book in the God’s Word For You series. It is excellent and helpful commentary and each one I’ve explored has proven valuable. I am especially excited about Psalms For You. The Psalms are so useful and helpful for the life of the believer. Learning to read and understand them well is valuable.
Divorce and Remarriage is a sensitive topic and you have to be careful writing about it. I would even say you have to be careful reviewing a book on the subject. Gordan J. Wenham, the author of Jesus, Divorce, and Remarriage recognizes this too and writes very carefully as he argues for what he sees to be the biblical teaching on this topic.
